"Colorectal Cancer Prevention and Treatment and other health issues"
Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world. It is even more common in developed countries.
Since 2006, colorectal cancer is the most prevalent cancer and the third leading cancer death cause in Taiwan. More than ten thousands of people were diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year. In United States, it is the second leading killer. In 2007, 142,672 people were diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and 53,219 people died from it.
Colorectal cancer can take many years to develop. An early detection greatly improves the chances of survival. Therefore, screening for the disease is recommended in individuals who are at increased risk. The treatment depends on the stage of the cancer. If colorectal cancer is caught at early stages (with little spread) it can be curable. However, at later stages (when distant metastases are present), it may be difficult to cure and surgery remains the primary treatment, while chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy may be recommended depending on the individual patient's staging and other medical factors.
Beside cancer, Dr. Chuang and Dr. Lee will share with the audience their stories in their medical careers.
